TMNT Michaelangelo
Ok, well I don't guess this guy needs any real explanation or introduction. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles just recently celebrated their '27th' anniversary as some of the most beloved and well-known characters in our world. I had intentions of making this doll a few years ago, but just kept putting it off for one reason or another....and finally just had to do it.
Those of you who are followers of my FaceBook Page saw the 'sneak peek' a few days ago, and the response was, to say the least, incredible. Turtles are something most of us can relate to, since they've been around for so long. I hope that this doll and pattern will please the 'hardcore' turtle fans who have been there since the beginning through all their 'changes'.... since this doll was mostly patterned after the 'old-school' original series.
Having been a fan of TMNT since the beginning myself, I'm most fond of the 'original' series - thus the reason this doll is made that way. The basic pattern can easily be made to create all four of the turtles, by simply changing the colors of the bandana and the weapons to represent the turtle of your choice. If I had enough greens to make them all I would... but I'll leave that up to all the wonderfully creative crocheters out there! :D
As always, if you find any typoes or mistakes in the pattern, please let me know, I'll correct them ASAP.
Mikey
MATERIALS:
WW yarn in choice of green (with smaller amounts of brown, tan and colors for bandana)
G crochet Hook
Fiberfill
yarn needle
Small scraps of white and black felt for eyes/mouth
NOTES:
Gauge isn't important, as long as your yarn, hook and tension result in stitches that are even and don't allow the stuffing to show through.
Numbers at the end of each round or row indicate the total number of stitches that should be in that round or row.
Magic ring instructions can be found easily by a websearch for 'crochet magic ring' . YouTube also has some very good video instructions by searching for 'crochet magic ring' on YouTube.
HEAD:
Rnd 1: 7 sc in magic ring (7)
Rnd 2: 2 sc in each sc around (14)
Rnd 3: sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc around (21)

Rnd 24: sc in each sc around (30)
Begin stuffing at this point if you haven't already. Stuff body firmly while shaping but avoid overstuffing. Continue stuffing as you progress.
Rnd 25: sc in next 9 sc, dec over next 2 sc (repeat decrease 2 more times), sc in next 9 sc, dec over next 2 sc (repeat decrease 2 more times) (24)

Rnd 9-11: sc in each sc around (even)
Rnd 12: sc in next sc, dec over next 2 sc around (8)

Chain 3, sc in second chain from hook and next chain, slip stitch along 'side' of hand (between rnd 18 and 19) to create 'thumb'
F/O and weave end in.
LEGS (make 2):
Rnd 1: 8 sc in magic ring (8)
Rnd 2: working in back loops only for this round, sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc around (12)
Rnd 3-7: (working again through both loops) sc in each sc around (12)
Rnd 8: dec over next 2 sc around (6)
Rnd 9: 2 sc in each sc around (12)
Rnd 10-15: sc in each sc around 12)
Rnd 16: sc in next 7 sc, chain 7, Join chain to first sc of this round. (7 sc, 7 chs)

Rnd 18: sc in each sc around (14)
Rnd 19: dec over next 2 sc around (7)
F/O. Weave in ends.
Stuff the leg (while shaping). Stuff moderately firm without overstuffing. 'Hip' is either not stuffed (flattened) or *very* lightly stuffed. Leg is pinned to side/bottom of body as shown, with 'hip' cape/flap to the outside and 'opening' at top of leg underneath. Very small amounts of stuffing can be added to the cape at the 'hip' to provide more shape if needed.
FEET (make 2):
Rnd 1: 6 sc in magic ring (6)
Rnd 2-3: sc in each sc around (6)
Rnd 4: 2 sc in each sc around (12)
Rnd 5-8: sc in each sc around (12)

sc in next 3 sc, turn, sc in next 3 sc, turn slip stitch across the 3 sc, and down the side to the main part of the foot, slip stitch to next sc of row 9. Sc in next 3 sc, turn, sc in next 3 sc, turn slip stitch across the 3 sc, and down the side to the main part of the foot, slip stitch to row 9 (between the two 'toes').
F/O, secure and weave in end.
(NOTE: Feet in the doll shown were not stuffed, just flattened. If you wish to add a *very* small amount of stuffing to the feet to give them a little more 'size' do this before you close the opening by sc across the top, then proceed as is written from there)
Feet are sewn as shown to the bottom of the legs. Make sure that you have the feet facing in the correct direction . (I find that pinning the legs to the doll and then pinning/sewing the feet to the bottom of the legs is most helpful as it ensures you have the right direction on both of the feet, and the best angle as well)
BELLY PLATE:
(using tan)
Row 1: chain 6, sc in second chain from hook and each chain across , turn (5)
Row 2: 2 sc in first sc, sc in each sc across to last sc, 2 sc in last sc, turn (7)

Row 7: sc in each sc across (11)
Row 8: 2 sc in first sc, sc in each sc across to last sc, 2 sc in last sc, turn (13)
Row 9: sc in each sc across (13)
Row 10: 2 sc in first sc, sc in each sc across to last sc, 2 sc in last sc, turn (15)
Row 11-24: sc in each sc across (15)

F/O. Weave in ends. Using brown yarn and yarn needle, add the detailing to the plate as shown in photos.
SHELL:
(Using brown)
Rnd 1: 8 sc in magic ring (8)
Rnd 2: 2 sc in each sc around (16)
Rnd 3: 2 sc in each of the next 2 sc, sc in next 4 sc, 2 sc in each of the next 4 sc, sc in next 4 sc, 2 sc in each of last 2 sc (24)
Rnd 4: sc in each sc around (24)
Rnd 5: 2 sc in each of the next 2 sc, sc in next 8 sc, 2 sc in each of the next 4 sc, sc in next 8 sc, 2 sc in each of last 2 sc (32)
Rnd 6: sc in each sc around (32)
Rnd 7: 2 sc in each of the next 2 sc, sc in next 12 sc, 2 sc in each of the next 4 sc, sc in next 12 sc, 2 sc in each of last 2 sc (40)
Rnd 8: sc in next 4 sc, 2 sc in next sc around (48)
Rnd 9-10: sc in each sc around (48)
SHELL RIM:
Rnd 1: ch 6, join to make ring, sc in each chain around (6)
Rnd 2-?: sc in each sc around (6 sc each round) until the tube will easily reach around the outside of the shell (the number of rounds will vary from person to person due to yarn, hook and tensions differences) Tube does not need to be stuffed, but if you wish, you can VERY lightly stuff the tube to give it more rigidity. When the tube will easily fit around the outside edge of the shell, F/O and sew ends of tube together. Pin and sew tube to outside edge of shell. Shell will be stuffed when sewn to the back of the turtle.
ELBOW/KNEE PADS:
Elbow pads (make 2):
Rnd 1: 8 sc in magic ring (8)
Rnd 2: 2 sc in each sc around (16)
Do not fasten off, continue with strap as follows:
Sc in next 2 sc, turn
Sc in 2 sc, turn
Repeat rows of 2 sc until strap will reach around arm at elbow (exact number of rows will vary from person to person due to yarn, hook and tension differences). F/O leaving tail. Sew end of strap to opposite side of 'pad'. Weave in ends.
KNEE PADS (make 2):
Rnd 1: 8 sc in magic ring (8)
Rnd 2: 2 hdc in each sc around (16)
Do not fasten off, continue with strap as follows:
Sc in next 2 sc, turn
Sc in 2 sc, turn
Repeat rows of 2 sc until strap will reach around leg at knee (exact number of rows will vary from person to person due to yarn, hook and tension differences) F/O leaving tail. Sew end of strap to opposite side of 'pad'. Weave in ends.
BANDANA:
Using color of choice:
Chain 2. Sc in second chain from hook, turn.
Sc in sc, turn
2 sc in sc, turn (2)
Continue with rows of 2 sc for approx. 20 rows (more if you want a longer tail on the bandana)
Next row: 2 sc in each sc across, turn (4)
Continue with rows of 4 sc until this section of the bandana will just wrap around the head above the 'nose' as shown.
Next row: Decrease over next 2 sc, twice, turn (2)
Continue with rows of 2 sc for the same length as before (2)
Decrease over next 2 sc, turn (1)
Sc in sc.
F/O, weave in ends.
"EYEBROWS":
Chain about 20 (check and see if you want more or less 'brow') Place in the shape of the brows over the top of the bandana. (this is probably best done after construction of the doll and eyes are in place so that you can see how much or how little 'brow' you want on your turtle)
BELT:
Chain 3, sc in second chain from hook and next sc , turn (2)
Continue rows of 2 sc for length desired for belt. Belt goes around the shell, so it's probably best to wait until doll is fully assembled before making the belt so that you can try it around the doll as you make it to ensure it's the length you want.
NUNCHUCKS:
(make 2)
Row 1: Chain 11, sc in second chain from hook and each chain across, turn (10)
Row 2-3: sc in each sc across, turn (10)
F/O leaving tail. With yarn needle, fold in half long ways and sew together with whip stitch.
Weave in tail.
Chain (make 1):
Chain approx 20 (or length desired). Attach each end to one of the 'chucks'.
FINAL ASSEMBLY:
I recommend pinning all the parts together before sewing to ensure you're happy with everything befoe making it permanent.
Head is sewn to top of body at neck opening. Belly Plate is sewn to front of body. Arms and legs are sewn to body positioned as desired.
Elbow and knee pads are placed on arms and legs as shown, they can be tacked on with a few stitches if you want.
Eyes are made by cutting pieces of felt and sewing/gluing them to the bandana. Mouth is made by cutting a piece of felt and sewing/gluing to the face as desired. Facial expressions can vary from turtle to turtle to give them each their own personality.
The doll can be made to represent any of the Turtles, by changing the color of the bandana, weapons and even facial expressions.

WOW!
Awesome! My boyfriend and I were just talking the other day about me making some ami TMNT's... He wants a Donatello so I might give this a go. Thankyou for posting :-)
AMAZING! I've been checking your FB page twice a day for updates since you posted the pic lol. I am going out today to buy some yarn, thank you so much for all of your amazing patterns, I truly appreciate them. Just a thought if you could maybe make patterns for the other turtles weapons, it would help out those of us who cannot make our own amazing patterns like you :)
Thanks again
What a great pattern. I will have to ask if the current group of nephews knows about them.
That is absolutely awesome! Thanks for posting all of that info. I'm sure it was a decent amount of work to make up the pattern.
I wanna cry! THIS IS FREAKING AWESOME!!!!! Thank you thank you thank you!!!!
its so cute my cousin loves it! I wish you could make a Vulpix Pokemon they are my favorite cartoon character.
Mikey looks awesome! Cowabunga, dude!
My nephew would love this.
Your patterns are AMAZING. I shared the Tails and Sonic plushie pictures with my grandson, it was "Tails' first grandma, then Sonic, please", he said, so one more tail, then finishing with the eyes and mouth. Tails will be finished. Thank you so much for sharing your patterns, especially for boys. I think I have a new crocheter coming along, her son wanted then too.
'til next time.
Connie
This looks so good! Thanks for sharing the pattern.

:O Wow. I'm not really a TMNT fan, but you did a great job on this! :) It was kind of... unexpected, lol, but at the same time I am very pleasantly surprised. You are awesome! :D
WOW! These are some amazing crochet patterns! Just stopping by to see what on the Hook. http://poshpoochdesignsdogclothes.blogspot.com/2011/03/shamrock-dog-collar-crochet-pattern.html
Thank you for sharing your talents with all. My grandkids love the toys I make using your patterns. You are very talented.
I love your Michaelangelo, you awesome job on him. I was wondering if you had a pattern for all of there weapons because I would love to make all of them.
I love TMNT! I don't know who's my favorite turtle--really a tie between Mikey, Raph and Donnie. Leo can take a hike. xD
This is such an awesome pattern. So glad you posted it up!
I have a question about the leg. I am not really clear what I am suppose to do when we get up to RND 16 where you chain 7 then join chain to first sc of this round. Does this leave a 7 chain gap like a gusset? Is this the hip part and you attach at this gap? I cannot really tell from the photo either. Thanks in advance. Maxine
This is incredable, so much detail.
I started working on it and I am just thrilled with how it is working up. I hate having so many peices to sew together so whenever I can I combine steps/pieces and so far it's worked for me. Your patterns are quite amazing thank you for sharing. I want to try the Kangaroo next. Tina's Grandma
I fell in love with this guy. My nephew and wife are expecting their 1st child in August and my nephew has always been a huge fan of the turtles. I decided to make this but I am off on my stitches starting on round 3. I came up with 19 instead of 21 and by the time I got to round 11 I was 10 over. To verify that I am reading your instructions correctly - Round 3 is "1 sc, 2 sc, 1 sc, 2 sc... around??
Thank you!
Sounds to me as if you're skipping over a stitch in your round. If you join your rounds, be certain that the first sc of the round goes into the same exact place that you joined in the previous round.
Round 11 can be a little tricky. It's one sc in each of the first 10 sc, 2 sc in each of the next 15 sc, and one sc in each of the last 10 sc (this begins the shaping for the mouth area)
Hope that helps a bit! If you're still having trouble, let me know, we can try to figure out where the problems are :D
I absolutely adore your patterns. The Pokemon, Ditto, is one of my favorites, I'd love to see a pattern for that, if you ever have the time. Or the other Eevee evolutions, that would also be cool.
I actually learned to crochet specifically so I could make your patterns. I just finished my first Pokeball.
i had a question about the leg. on rnd 16 is it supposed to leave a gap?
Yes, it will leave a 'gap'. After the leg is stuffed, you can VERY lightly stuff that top piece (the 'hip') if you want, but it's not usually necessary.
It's used much like a shoulder on arms to give you more flexibility in positioning the arm.
harika
Many thankssss for wonderful patterns. I just visit your blog today but I think I should come here every day same as other.lol
I love it! It'll make a great plush for presents. My cousin will fall in love! You know, I'm a crazy vulpix fan. I'd just extremly love it if you would make a Vulpix plushie! I'd just die. It would make my day. I hope you can!
yes! i can finally make my best friend something! thanks!
Hi, I was just wondering if there was any way you could make up the rest of the weapons or at least tell me how because I am a beginner and I have no clue how to make thing right out from my head. It would be great if you could hep me.
Thank you
My son loves the Mikey I made him from your pattern and is eagerly awaiting his fearsome brothers' arrival. If you'd like, I can send you the patterns for the individual weapons. Any possibility you will be working on a Splinter to complete the family?
i saw all your patterns and all i can say is that they are all amazing.. you are amazing and very kind enough to give away your patterns.. thank you so much for sharing it with.
Hi,I normaly do not crotch, so I am a new beginner in this field, but I had to make this Turtle, because I have two little "grandchrildren" age 4 today, so now I have finished my first bigger croching project.
Since I am from Denmark, I had to tranlate the pattern, which took som time, but i managed it.
I have picture of the finished Turtles on my blog - strikkesinen.blogspot.com - the result is not nearly as good at yours I'm afraid, so I might have to practise on some more of your wonderfull designs :-)
Leo was my favorite turtle, he's really cool, but Mikey is #1 for me! XD
You patterns are wonderful! They are everything I plan out but never would have the time to write out! Thank you so much for sharing your talent.
You are my hero. Nerdy AND a crocheter. Seriously, this is AMAZING. My boyfriend keeps checking the blog and asking "can you make that? Can you make THIS." Thanks for all the patterns!
Love this pattern. Thank you. I made him for my nephew he loved it.
I am working on the legs. But I got to where it says sc in next 7 sts. Ch 7 join to first sc of this row. Is there supposed to be an opening where I joined the ch. if so when I finished the leg. Please tell me what do do with the whole that is left there
Do you have patterns for the othe ninja turtles weapons
This Is Awesome, thank you! Cowabunga, dude!
So I know other people have asked already, but is there any way you can post a pattern for the other weapons? You see, I'm getting married in 16 days and my future wifey absolutely loves Raphael. She has tmnt towels, sheets, a blanket, action figures, shirts, and much more. I'm working on your amazing pattern now, but I'm afraid I wont be able to dream up his weapons on my own. Help a girl out here! Thanks so much for being awesome!
--Sam
Please tell me what a magic ring is? I have been crocheting for 20+ years and have never heard heard of a magic ring??
Magic ring is not really a new thing, it just got 'rediscovered' about 10 years ago and renamed 'magic ring' when crochet became popular again with young people.
When I learned to crochet about 40 years ago, I learned it as a 'slip ring'. And until just the last few years, have always called it that (I still do mostly, but when speaking to younger or new crocheters I try to remember to use Magic Ring)
If you go to YouTube and enter 'crochet magic ring' or 'crochet magic circle'... you will get hundreds of video instructions on it.
You can also google 'crochet magic ring' and get a good number of websites with written/photo instructions as well. :D
Hope that helps!
SLIP RING!!! Thank u!
Can I ask someone who has made this how big it actually is, I've started working it and it seems a lot smaller than I expected, I don't know if I'm doing something wrong (I'm semi new to crochet)or if the pattern makes a smaller doll.
Can't wait to make this! Just wondering how tall abouts is it? I was hoping to make one around 12" tall so just wondering if I should double the yarn up to get it larger. Thanks in advance :)
i would also love to know about how tall the finished product is.
last year i made the sonic and it turned out great! great site!
first off, thank you for this pattern you are AWESOME! My daughter is a second gen TMNT fan and I wanted to find a good pattern to use to make her one for christmas. This is off the chain! lol.... that was ghetto. Anyways, you mentioned about the changes throughout the years and I am going to say it, some of them SUCKED! I too am an original fan, therefore I believe they should have left them the way they were. I am just thankful that the Japanese looking style only lasted a short time, that was by far my least favorite of the changes and inappropriate for the younger children who loved the show. I was a fan from toddler on up, my name is April, and of course I am guessing that stemmed my love for the show. Mikey was my favorite and now he is my daughters, :) so thank you for the lovely pattern!
i made a leonardo, you can see him here. the finished product was about a foot tall. great pattern - THANK YOU!!!
I am making this for my nephew. I am a bit confused aboug the eyebrows. Is the chain just for the top? Or does it go all around eye? How is it attatched? Please advise...thanks, love this pattern
Can anyone tell me how to print the pattern on windows 8 i cant figure it out please..thank you
can you help me i want to make an iron man for my granson hes a big fan any ideas how i can get started
hey i was wondering if i tripple the pattern would it come out right to make a giant one wanting to make one that is like 3 foot tall what do you think?
Question on the shell rim. Are you supposed to f/o and then start the rim of the shell? It is not turning out right for me. I am stumped. Every thing else is great. This is a wonderful pattern. I am making one for my 2 year old grandson. Thanks
Yes, Konrel they are two separate pieces. You make the shell rim and shell and attach them to each other. I have made 4 of these so far. :)
On the legs, after rnd 16 there will be 2 openings? Not sure how they are attached to the body and what about smaller opening that is left. Is it supposed to be closed up. Would appreciate some other pic to kniw hiw to better attach the legs
Thank you Kimpossible for your help. I see now how it is done.
Can I make this without doing magic ring.??
Yes. You can chain 3 or so and form a ring. Just make certain that your ring closes up completely so that the stuffing won't peek through
Just wondering, is this guy supposed to be able to stand by himself? If so, I could use some advice.
Hi, I had a question about rnd 16 for the legs. I read the previous comments made but I still can't figure it out. The way I understand it, I end up with a hole. Would you be able to dumb it down for me please lol?
love this! i did everything but am confused about the legs. mine comes out with a loop and the end.help!
Been asked about making a master splinter. Any chance u mite have one coming soon?
I also am stuck on row 16-17 of the leg.
Do you by chance have a pattern for the other 3 turtles? I am wanting to make them for my son.
All the turtles are basically identical. The only thing that is changed is the color of the bandana over the eyes and the weapons. You can easily Google the turtles to see which color and weapon each one has. :-)
Any help on row 16-17? As some have asked?
On 16 you sc 7 then chain 7. Slip stitch to the first sc of this round. Continue working thr rounds on these 14 sc. This will make a sort of pacman mouth looking part that is the *hip*.
When attaching that part you open the 'mouth' like its biting on the body. The small rounded top is either lightly stuffed or not stuffed depending on how beefy you want the hips to look.
This method also makes leg placement much more flexible so the positions you can create are many. Play with placement and angles to get the look you prefer.
Hi there how tall will this be when standing
Shell, after Round 9-10. It stops, do you fasten off?
Maria
Anyone willing to make the set of all four and sell them if so message me I have no clue how to make these
Hi I have the same issue did you resolve it
Hi I love this pattern!!! Can you tell me how tall he is?
Hi I am really interested in learning how to make the other weapons my nephew loves the ninja turtles I was wondering if you could send me the patterns I have looked everywhere and can not find how to make them online
cant figure out how to attach the legs
hi i am trying to crochet your ninja turtle i am stuck on the legs round 16 it says sc in the first 7 st then chain 7 join to the first round i tried many times and this is not working can u help me and thank u donna
How do you attach the leg? I have curved top on leg opening where I think that I attach this to body..but then I have a small hole on other side..do I just stitch this closed ..I do not see a hole in your picture
I loved making this cool, little guy for my brother, but could not decide which turtle to turn him into. After a lot of pondering, I thought why not all of them? With that, I put Velcro on his hands and on each weapon, then all four different colored bandannas! Cannot wait to see what he thinks!!!
What do you do at the end of the shell on round 9&10 it doesn't say to F/O.
The legs leave me scratching my head...there is the top opening and then there is the hole left by the sc in the next 7 st and then ch 7 and attach to the first st... I see some other questions about it as well, but no responses. Can you help??
Found the response, but it's still not clear...looks awkward...
I am trying to learn to read patterns. Could somebody explain #3 to me? Thanks
Sc in the first sc, 2 sc in the next sc(increase) . Repeat the sequence of sc, increase to end of the round.
Hola amei vou fazer também
My two thirty-something sons are thrilled to TMNT crochet. Too many Disney princesses at their house. Been crocheting forever but the feet are stumping me. "Turn slip stitch across the 3 SC, and down the side to the main part of the foot, etc"? Can't figure it out. Help.
Hello and first of all Thank you for the TMNT pattern.
I hoping I can bother for some much needed Help!! it would Greatly be appreciated. Im stressing and nervous that Im not going to get this but Im really praying that you will PLEASE reach out.
it seems several people are having the same problem so that makes me feel a little better that maybe im not so dumb. but enough rattling on.
my issue are the legs when you get to the 7 chains and attach it at the beginning sc which leaves a pac man mouth as you mention but where im confused i think is how do you attach it to the body i think if you open the mouth like biting the body as you mentioned it leaves the very top portion like the last 3 or 4 rows sticking out a little is it suppose to do that?
also on the pattern you explain attaching the leg a little differently then when replying above on 09-17-2014 at 4:33 could you Please clarify?
and lastly if by chance if you have any pics that shows this more clearer that would be very helpful as you can really tell in the pics on the pattern.
Thank you so much for your time
and Please I ask for your patience and helpfulness so i can get this done.
God Bless
